NEW DELHI: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader Kanimozhi on Monday criticised Tamil Nadu chief minister C Joseph Vijay over the state’s law and order situation, questioning the TVK-led government’s commitment to ensuring women’s safety. In her remarks, Kanimozhi referred to Vijay as “maternal uncle”, referring to the Thaimaman Seer scheme introduced by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government. The scheme’s name translates to “maternal uncle’s gift” in English. Also Read | What is CM Vijay’s ‘Thai Maman’ gold ring scheme? Who gets the 1-gram gold ring and whyAccusing the Tamil Nadu government of inaction on women’s safety, Kanimozhi cited cases of missing children in Senji and Ranipet, alleging that the administration had failed to take adequate steps to trace them and ensure justice. The DMK deputy general secretary also referred to several incidents, including the murder of a woman in Madurantakam and a violent attack on a family in Thoothukudi. She expressed concern that criminal elements were becoming increasingly emboldened due to alleged political patronage.“They have announced a scheme called ‘Thaimaman Seer’,” Kanimozhi, sister of DMK president and former Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin, told reporters in Chennai.“But the maternal uncle himself is nowhere to be found. The maternal uncle who is supposed to protect us — where has he gone? That is the situation in Tamil Nadu today,” the Lok Sabha MP remarked.Kanimozhi further alleged that TVK functionaries were directly involved in criminal activities and sexual violence, acting with impunity under the belief that the ruling party would protect them.Referring to Vijay’s earlier remarks on the state’s law and order situation, she questioned, “Is this a (welfare) state or a forest (lawless land)?”The DMK leader also claimed that people across Tamil Nadu felt unsafe and lived in constant fear, both inside and outside their homes. Before assuming office, Vijay had repeatedly criticised the state’s law and order situation and promised to address the issue if elected to power. Kanimozhi pointed out that the same concerns he had previously raised about public safety were now being directed at his own administration.
