Govatsa Dwadashi 2026: What Is the Significance of the Cow Offering on 5 November, the Evening Before Dhanteras?
On November 5, Govatsa Dwadashi presents a sacred opportunity for families to engage in rituals that precede Dhanteras. This day is particularly significant due to favorable planetary alignments, emphasizing the act of serving cows. Offerings such as jaggery and kheer are recommended to honor celestial bodies like Jupiter, Venus, and the Moon. Observers are encouraged to adhere to fasting rules and maintain respectful interactions with cows during this holy occasion.

Most people get ready for Dhanteras well in advance. They clean their homes and decide on the things they are going to buy. But the evening before Dhanteras has a role of its own in the celebrations. Govatsa Dwadashi falls on Thursday, 5 November, at a time when the planets make cow service much more than a ritual. Venus is about to weaken and the Sun is debilitated. And the day itself is ruled by Jupiter. So the simple act of making an offering to a cow and her calf this evening becomes a remedy for all three planets.

A Thursday Dwadashi Is Rare in Itself

A Dwadashi that falls on a Thursday during Diwali week should not be taken lightly. The tithi starts at 10:35 AM on 5 November and continues until the next morning. Hence it covers the whole evening. And since it is a Thursday, many calendars also list it as Guru Dwadashi.Thursday is governed by Jupiter, and the cow and Jupiter share similar qualities. In Jyotish, the cow is generous and blesses every member of the family without asking for anything in return. Jupiter remedies have always included feeding cows with gur and soaked chana.Pradosh kaal starts at sunset and lasts for roughly two and a half hours. In Delhi-NCR, that means about 5:35 PM to 8:10 PM. Further west it starts slightly later.

Dhanteras and the Venus Dilemma

In Vedic astrology, Venus is the planet most closely associated with the cow. Venus signifies wealth and prosperity, including the gold and silver that people rush to buy on Dhanteras. In 2026, Venus is in difficulty. It has been retrograde since early October. On Friday, 6 November, which is Dhanteras, it moves back into sidereal Virgo, the sign where Venus is debilitated. It will remain in Virgo until 22 November. That is why the eve of Dhanteras is the most auspicious time for the traditional way of pleasing Venus, which is making an offering to a cow. Venus is especially pleased by white food, such as rice kheer or a chapati with ghee.

The Moon Joins In

In the sidereal zodiac, the Moon enters Virgo at around 9:34 AM on 5 November and remains there through the puja hours. It moves through Uttara Phalguni nakshatra, which is ruled by the Sun.The Moon rules milk and motherhood. That is why fasting mothers avoid cow’s milk and curd on this day and leave it all for the calf. A calm Moon brings a calm mind, and that is just what mothers fasting for their children pray for.The Sun stays debilitated in Libra until 16 November. With the Moon in the Sun’s own nakshatra, Uttara Phalguni, a small prayer to Surya at sunset before the cow puja will bring added blessings.

Planets and Their Offerings

For Jupiter: jaggery and soaked chana, with a yellow cloth or yellow flowers placed on the cow.For Venus: a chapati with ghee or a little kheer. Then apply sandalwood paste to the cow’s forehead. For the Moon: fresh green fodder and clean water, offered to the calf first.Families who do not own a cow can make their offerings at a gaushala, or gently feed a cow found on the street. And those living far from any cattle need not worry, since a donation for cow fodder is enough.

Small Rules to Follow

If you are fasting, do not eat wheat. Bajra or jowar rotis can be eaten instead.Avoid shouting at a cow or chasing it away on this day.Apply haldi and kumkum to the cow and calf before the aarti. Then light a diya and keep it at the main door once the puja is over.
