NEW DELHI: R Praggnanandhaa, who is currently ranked 8th in the world and second in India, has admitted that his form has dropped in recent months. The 20-year-old grandmaster spoke honestly about his struggles after a very busy 2025 season.Praggnanandhaa had a strong start to 2025, where he won several big tournaments, including the Tata Steel Masters, the Superbet Chess Classic Romania, and the Uzchess Cup.
However, things changed in the second half of the year. Towards the end of 2025, his results were not as good. He struggled at the Grand Chess Tour finals and also failed to impress at the World Cup in Goa. His form dipped again at the World Rapid and Blitz Championship in Doha.Speaking about his form and the upcoming Candidates, where he will be India’s sole representative, Praggnanandhaa said he is not too worried.“No, not really. I’m not thinking about the Candidates. It’s certainly my play; it’s not on the same level as it used to be. Lately, I haven’t played up to my best. So, there are certainly areas to work on. I believe it’s partially due to playing continuous tournaments. There’s just no time to even think about what’s going on. But I think the chess calendar is such that the important tournaments just keep coming,” the Chennai-born grandmaster was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.Praggnanandhaa said he is happy to finally get a break. After the Tata Steel Masters in Wijk aan Zee, he will be free in February and March. He feels this gap will help him rest and prepare better.“After Wijk aan Zee, I have my calendar free for February and March before the Candidates. So I’ll have time to prepare. It’s good to have a break before the Candidates, as I have been playing a lot. It’s certainly an important year for everyone. It’s the Candidates and World Championship year, so I’ll be focusing on it and trying to give my best,” he said.
