US navy helicopter makes emergency water landing in Arabian Sea; one crew member missing
A US navy MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter made an emergency water landing in the Arabian Sea Tuesday, with one crew member still missing as search operations continue, the US naval forces central command (NAVCENT) said.In a statement posted on X, NAVCENT said the incident took place at 3.30am ET on July 1, when the helicopter, assigned to USS George HW Bush (CVN 77), was forced to make an emergency landing in the sea.“There is no indication the emergency was caused by hostile action,” the command said, amid heightened regional tensions following the recent US-Iran conflict.According to NAVCENT, three of the helicopter’s four crew members have been rescued and are in stable condition aboard USS George HW Bush. US navy assets deployed in the region are continuing search operations for the fourth crew member, who remains missing.The cause of the incident is under investigation.The emergency comes days after a fragile ceasefire between the US and Iran helped ease fears of a broader regional conflict. The truce led to the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and a decline in global oil prices, offering temporary relief to energy markets.However, analysts cited by Reuters have cautioned that the ceasefire may be tactical rather than lasting. Longstanding disputes over Iran’s nuclear programme, regional influence and US sanctions remain unresolved, despite both sides agreeing to hold talks over the next 60 days. While markets have responded positively for now, uncertainty over the durability of the truce persists.
