Toll rises to 103; 87,000 remain affected in four districts
NEW DELHI: The flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement on Wednesday, with the number of people affected falling to around 87,000 across four districts. However, the death toll from this year’s floods rose to 103 after two more people died in the past 24 hours.The latest figures from the Assam State Disaster Management Authority showed that one person drowned in Sivasagar and another in Karbi Anglong.Around 86,800 people are still affected by the floods in Golaghat, Jorhat, Nagaon and Sivasagar. Golaghat remains the worst-hit district, with more than 42,000 people affected. Nagaon has around 20,000 affected residents, while Sivasagar has about 15,000.The situation has nevertheless improved compared with Tuesday, when nearly 1.13 lakh people were affected across the four districts.Authorities are continuing relief operations in the affected areas. A total of 79 relief camps and distribution centres are currently operating across five districts, providing assistance to 13,011 people.Over the past 24 hours, relief agencies distributed nearly 96.55 quintals of rice, 18.26 quintals of dal, 5.41 quintals of salt and more than 204 litres of mustard oil among flood-affected families.

Despite the improvement, the floods continue to damage homes, farmland and infrastructure.According to ASDMA, 433 villages remain underwater, while more than 10,884 hectares of crop land have been damaged across the state.Floodwaters have also damaged embankments, roads, bridges and other infrastructure in several districts.The Dhansiri River at Numaligarh continues to flow above the danger mark, adding to concerns in the affected areas.The floods have also affected livestock. More than 32,900 domestic animals and poultry have been impacted across Assam.While the overall number of people affected has declined, the rising death toll and continuing damage to villages, farmland and infrastructure show that the flood crisis is far from over.
