Margaret Qualley goes barefoot on the red carpet in Chanel’s bizarre sandals, leaves fans confused |
Margaret Qualley may have arrived at the red carpet in a beautiful Chanel dress, but it was her shoes that everyone ended up talking about. The actor attended the London premiere of The Dog Stars on August 20 alongside director Ridley Scott and co-stars Josh Brolin, Jacob Elordi, Benedict Wong and Guy Pearce. Her black Chanel sandals, however, had the internet doing a double take.Because, technically, they barely qualify as shoes.
Chanel’s ‘barefoot’ sandals have people confused
The unusual footwear was first shown by Chanel designer Matthieu Blazy during the brand’s Resort 2027 collection in Biarritz, France. The design consists of little more than a leather heel cap, complete with strings that wrap around the foot. The front of the foot? Completely exposed.Qualley wore the black version, which featured thin straps tied around her feet and a small heel covering finished with a gold Chanel monogram. Her toes and soles were left entirely uncovered, creating the rather strange impression that she had simply forgotten to put on shoes before walking onto the red carpet. And the internet had thoughts. One Instagram user didn’t hold back, writing, “Can we all agree that this is a horrible design and these shoes should never be worn by anyone.”Another summed up the confusion rather perfectly: “I feel like that’s the wrong part of the foot to cover.”Then came the jokes.“Inflation hit fashion; it’s too expensive to make a full shoe,” one person quipped.Another wrote, “I can’t believe someone actually wore these Chanel shoes!” while someone else had a more practical concern: “But what if she has to use a restroom?!”And one fan, despite being a Qualley admirer, wasn’t convinced. “I love Margaret, I’m sure Chanel is great too, but these are the stupidest shoes ever,” they wrote.Someone else wondered how much the unusual design costs, joking that it probably comes with a four-figure price tag despite being, well, half a shoe.
The dress, meanwhile, was classic Margaret
Ironically, the rest of Qualley’s look was far less controversial. She wore a striking black Chanel dress designed by Blazy, featuring cap sleeves, delicate fringe detailing, a plunging V-neckline and a fluid, understated silhouette. Her beauty look kept things equally polished. She wore her hair loose with a centre parting and paired it with glossy red lips, winged eyeliner, rouged cheeks and softly feathered brows. So while the dress was doing everything right, it was the barely-there footwear that stole the spotlight.Whether Chanel’s ‘barefoot shoes’ are a bold fashion statement or simply a very expensive way to go barefoot, the internet seems to have already made up its mind.
