'Jaya Bachchan asking us to design for Shweta Bachchan's wedding was a big thing,' says Sandeep Khosla: 'Amitabh Bachchan loves luxury, carries everything elegantly'

Celebrity fashion designer Sandeep Khosla, one half of the designer duo Abu Jani, Sandeep Khosla has spent more than four decades dressing some of India’s most prominent personalities, but his association with the Bachchan family remains among the memorable chapters of his career. In an exclusive conversation, Khosla opened up about the family’s individual fashion identities and recalled some of the occasions that have stood out to him over the years. In a recent interview, Khosla reflected on his long journey in fashion and recalled how significant it was when Jaya Bachchan entrusted him and his design partner Abu Jani with Shweta Bachchan’s wedding. The designers were also responsible for creating outfits for the entire Bachchan family for the celebrations.“When Jaya asked us to do Shweta’s wedding and we were dressing the whole family in our clothes, that was a big thing,” he said in an interview with NDTV.Khosla also weighed in on what makes the Bachchans particularly interesting from a fashion perspective. With every member of the family known for having a distinct personality and an individual approach to dressing, the designer singled out Amitabh Bachchan for the impact he has had on men’s fashion in India.“I think Mr Bachchan is the ultimate cool person when it comes to fashion. He’s always been a leader. He loves luxury, he wears luxury, and he carries everything so elegantly. He’s made the men’s shawl so popular and easy to wear for every man in the country. Whatever you give him to wear, he’s unafraid to wear it. He’s not following trends; he’s setting them, and he knows that.”According to Khosla, Amitabh Bachchan’s fashion choices stand out because of his willingness to experiment. Rather than simply adopting what is popular, the veteran actor has consistently carried unconventional and luxurious pieces with confidence, helping turn several styles into mainstream trends.Khosla also spoke about Jaya Bachchan’s signature sartorial identity. He recalled how frequently she wore white sarees and how her association with the colour eventually helped popularise the look.“Jaya wore that extensively, and she became known as the lady in white. As a result, that whole trend caught on,” said the designer. For Khosla, his decades-long association with the Bachchan family appears to be about more than simply creating clothes. Their willingness to embrace distinctive styles and carry them with confidence has made them particularly memorable muses for a designer whose work has been closely associated with Indian glamour and couture.
