Mirzapur Movie Review and Release Live Updates: Pankaj Tripathi, Ravi Kishan starrer records a roaring opening, earns Rs 24.75 crore

The wait is finally over! ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ has arrived in theatres on September 4, taking audiences back to the world of Purvanchal with an “unexplored” story set in 2018, the year the first season of the hit series was released. Rather than serving as a direct continuation, the film reportedly explores a new narrative within the Mirzapur universe.

The movie is set between Episode 6 and Episode 7 of Season 1, allowing several familiar characters (including some who are later killed in the series) to return on screen. Pankaj Tripathi reprises his role as Kaleen Bhaiya, while Divyenndu returns as Munna Tripathi and Shweta Tripathi Sharma as Golu Gupta. Actor-politician Ravi Kishan also plays a central role in the new story.

Tripathi has assured audiences that prior knowledge of the series is not essential to enjoy the film. “You don’t need to be familiar with Mirzapur at all to enjoy the film. We have shot it from the point of view of community viewing, as opposed to personal viewing on TV and mobile devices,” he said to the Hollywood Reporter India.

The film has also received its CBFC certification with reportedly minimal modifications, retaining the raw and unfiltered elements that have become synonymous with the franchise.

At the box office, ‘Mirzapur: The Movie’ is eyeing a strong opening of around Rs 25 crore net in India. The film could challenge ‘Awarapan 2’, which opened at around Rs 22 crore net, for a spot among the biggest Hindi openings of 2026. With September 4 coinciding with the Janmashtami holiday, the film also has the advantage of potentially strong spot bookings.

While the film carries an ‘A’ certification, its massive fan base and the holiday advantage could help it deliver a bigger opening. If audience word of mouth is positive, the film could potentially push towards the Rs 30 crore mark.

Directed by Gurmmeet Singh, the film features Jitendra Kumar, Ravi Kishan and Abhishek Banerjee as new additions, alongside Mohitt Maalik, Sheeba Chadha, Rajesh Tailang, Pramod Pathak, Shriya Pilgaonkar, Harshita Shekhar Gaur, Shweta Tripathi Sharma, Sonal S. Chauhan, Anangsha Biswas, Shaji Chaudhary, Satendra Soni, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Sushant Singh.
