NEW DELHI: The Ganga breached the ‘highest flood mark’ at Patna’s Gandhi Ghat amid heavy rain in Bihar, with the river’s water level rising 10 cm in four hours on Saturday morning, according to an official bulletin.The river was flowing 1 cm above the highest flood level at 10 am, reaching 50.53 metres at Gandhi Ghat, the Water Resources Department (WRD) said.“The Ganga water level at Gandhi Ghat in Patna rose by 10 cm in the past four hours, reaching 50.53 cm, which is 1 cm above the highest flood level, at 10 am on Saturday,” the department said in its latest bulletin, as quoted by PTI.The situation could worsen further, with the WRD forecasting a continued rise in the river’s water level. “The forecast is that the Ganga water level at Gandhi Ghat is likely to rise further to 50.62 cm by 8 am on Sunday. People have been advised to exercise caution,” it said.The rising water has raised concerns over possible inundation in low-lying areas of Patna, with people being urged to remain cautious.

Several districts across Bihar are already facing flood-like conditions as heavy rainfall in the state and neighbouring Nepal has pushed multiple rivers above their danger marks. The Ganga, Gandak, Kosi, Burhi Gandak, Bagmati, Punpun and Ghaghra are among the rivers flowing above danger levels.Chief minister Samrat Choudhary conducted an aerial survey of the affected areas on Friday and reviewed relief and rescue operations.He directed officials to identify affected families and ensure they receive relief on time. He also ordered continuous monitoring of vulnerable areas and the Ganga embankments between Buxar and Bhagalpur to prevent erosion and possible breaches.
