Enforce speed curb device norms: SC to govts | India News

New Delhi: More than a decade after govt mandated installation of speed limiting devices or speed limiting functions in all public transport vehicles, enforcement remains lax, and Supreme Court Tuesday directed Centre, states and UTs to ensure compliance.Rule 118 of Central Motor Vehicles Rules provides for speed governors, and SC had passed various orders for installation of speed limiting devices. Though the SC committee on road safety had written to principal secretaries, transport secretaries and transport commissioners of all states and UTs in this regard, it was not implemented.Taking exception, a bench of Justices J B Pardiwala and K V Viswanathan said the law had been framed by Centre and govt had to take steps to implement the statutory provision.“Why does govt need directions from the court? These are statutory provisions and rules,” the bench said.
