Bihar harassment case: NCW takes suo motu cognizance, demands immediate arrest of perpetrators | India News
NEW DELHI: The National Commission for Women (NCW) on Monday took suo motu cognizance of harassment and assault of a young woman and her male companion in Bihar’s Jamui district, after a video of the incident surfaced on social media.NCW chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar wrote to Bihar director general of police, calling for the immediate registration of an FIR, identification and arrest of all those involved, and a time-bound and impartial investigation.The commission has specifically asked authorities to use the video footage to identify the alleged perpetrators and take action against them.The incident reportedly took place on the evening of September 19. Bihar Police said the woman and the man were allegedly stopped and harassed by a group of people by the roadside.Jamui Police said that an FIR had been registered and SIT was formed to probe the incident. Moreover, 3 people have been taken into custody.

“An FIR has been registered regarding the incident of molestation and indecent behavior by anti-social elements shown in the video, and a SIT has been constituted under the leadership of the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Jamui; the team is conducting continuous raids. Based on identifications made from the video, three individuals have been taken into custody,” news agency ANI quoted SP Vishwajeet Dayal saying.“Two others have been identified, and efforts are underway to arrest them as well… As for the main accused—the one who appears to have behaved indecently with the woman—he has been identified, and we are making efforts to arrest him soon; we are actively working on this… We will take action against those attempting to tarnish the reputation of Jamui district… We have arrested three minors so far; as the investigation proceeds and more individuals are taken into custody...,” he added.According to the SP, the young man and woman are friends and attend the same coaching institute. He did not disclose additional details, saying, “We must keep some information private”.
