He left studies after Class 12, suffered 1992 stock market scam; now Dinesh Thakkar owns an entire ₹711 crore Juhu tower in Mumbai
A Class 12 graduate who once chose business over conventional higher education is now making headlines for one of India’s most expensive residential property purchases. Meet Dinesh Thakkar, founder, chairman and managing director of Angel One. In a recent news update, Thakkar has agreed to buy an entire residential tower in Mumbai’s Juhu for about ₹711 crore. Now that is not just any high-profile purchase about the price tag. It is also a story of a man’s unusual entrepreneurial journey. How a young man who entered the stock market, suffered heavy losses and faced the aftermath of the 1992 scam and still built one of India’s prominent retail broking platforms. From Class 12 to stockbroking

Thakkar’s is not an ordinary story. As per profiles based on his own accounts, he studied till 12 class. He was born in Mumbai’s Mulund region and came from a business family involved in textile trading. He initially joined the family business but eventually decided to try his hand at the stock market.Thakkar has extensively spoken about borrowing money from friends to enter the market. An early bout of market volatility reportedly resulted in losses of around ₹6 lakh. Instead of walking away, he began looking more closely at how the broking business worked and what retail investors needed. That eventually took him from being a market participant to becoming a broker.1992 scam

The 1992 securities scam and the turmoil that followed left Thakkar heavily in debt, according to his account. The business survived with backing from three investors, who reportedly invested ₹50 lakh each. The company that eventually emerged from that journey was incorporated as Angel Broking in 1996. Angel One’s own investor information lists August 8, 1996, as its date of incorporation and identifies Dinesh D. Thakkar as its founder, chairman and managing director. From traditional broker to digital financial platformAngel One began as a traditional stockbroking company. Over the years, it moved towards a technology-led model, with the company describing 2019 as the beginning of its digital journey with an end-to-end digital investment platform. That transformation mirrors the larger change in India’s investment culture — from phone calls and physical paperwork to smartphones, digital onboarding and app-based trading. And decades later, after entering the financial markets, he is making headlines for a very different kind of transaction.₹711 crore for an entire tower, ‘Angelus’

On September 22, 2026 Embassy Developments announced that it had signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Thakkar for the sale of an entire residential tower at Embassy Terazza in Juhu. The developer described it as India’s largest single residential unit transaction. The tower is technically a G+7 structure, meaning ground plus seven upper floors, eight levels in all. It has a RERA carpet area of 63,000 sq ft and a transaction value of approximately ₹711 crore. That works out to roughly ₹1.13 lakh per sq ft based on the stated carpet area.Rather than buying one apartment in a luxury tower, Thakkar is taking an entire vertical slice of the development. He has named the residence ‘Angelus’.Why Juhu?

“Juhu has always had a special character,” he said in a statement released by Embassy Developments.Embassy Terazza is located on Juhu Tara Road, one of Mumbai’s established luxury residential addresses. The development is spread across more than two acres and has around 50 residences across five towers. Each tower has one residence per floor, with the project designed around privacy, sea and city views, landscaped spaces and wellness and lifestyle amenities. The project itself has an estimated gross development value of more than ₹3,000 crore. For a man whose career began with a Class 12 education, borrowed money, early market losses and a battered brokerage business, the purchase represents a striking chapter in a journey that has unfolded alongside India’s transformation from traditional stockbroking to digital investing.
