Lakshadweep ends nearly 47-year old liquor ban in tourism push; what travellers need to know
In a bid to boost tourism, India’s one of the most sought-after tropical destinations, Lakshadweep will now allow regulated liquor sales across the archipelago. With this, the destination is entering a new phase of tourism after the Union government introduced Lakshadweep Excise Regulation, 2026. The new framework is a part of a broader strategy to place the islands as a world-class beach and marine tourism destination.A look at the new law:As per the newly introduced regulation, the Centre has repealed the almost 47 years old Lakshadweep Prohibition Regulation 1979 and replaced it with a licensing system governing the import, transport, sale, purchase and consumption of liquor. The new rule allows government-owned agencies to obtain licences for importing and retailing alcoholic beverages.Key pointers:

1) Applicants seeking liquor licences must be Indian citizens aged 18 years or above.2) Liquor outlets must be located at least 50 metres away from schools, hospitals, orphanages and places of worship.3) The sale of alcohol to people below 21 years of age is strictly prohibited.4) The regulation bars the employment of minors in liquor-related businesses.5) The market is heavily controlled by the government, say reports.6) Steep duties—400% excise duty on Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) and imported liquor, 200% on beer, and 80% on wine.A step to boost tourismThe reason behind this major decision comes as Lakshadweep continues to receive global attention. In addition to allowing liquor, the administration has also simplified visitor permit procedures to make Lakshwadeep travel easier. This means a larger push toward increasing tourist arrivals. What it means for travellersLakshadweep has long been seen as India’s one of the most spectacular beach destinations. But tourism remained relatively limited because of strict rules, regulations, and permits. The restricted accommodation capacity was also a major reason behind its lesser-explored territories. After identifying the issues, the islands are now seeing great efforts aimed at attracting more domestic and international visitors. By better connectivity, easier access and upgraded tourism facilities, the officials aim to boost tourism in the region. What’s more in Lakshadweep
