The actor shared the update while speaking at the audio launch of his upcoming film ‘Baththa.‘ He also opened up about the journey of the original ‘Maharaja’ and the surprise of seeing the film head towards a Hollywood remake. His latest comments give a clearer picture of both projects and show that the success of the 2024 thriller continues to open new doors.

Speaking about the sequel at the ‘Baththa’ audio launch, Vijay Sethupathi had high praise for Nithilan Saminathan and revealed that the director has already shared the story with him. “Nithilan is an excellent director. He has a great writing sense. He recently told me the story of Maharaja 2. It was so beautiful. Working with him was superb,” the actor said, as reported by Cinema Express. His statement confirms that the sequel has moved beyond a basic idea, with a story already developed by Nithilan. The duo’s first collaboration became one of the major Tamil cinema success stories of 2024.

Vijay Sethupathi also recalled how he reacted when producer Sudhan Sundaram informed him that ‘Maharaja’ had been sold for a Hollywood adaptation. The actor said the news brought him immense happiness, especially because he has long wanted to work in Hollywood. “He recently called me and told me that he has sold the Hollywood rights of the film. I told him, ‘I’ll act in the movie for free. Get me a role in that Hollywood remake. I’ll go to Hollywood!’ It gives me such a great surprise and happiness. I’ve always had a big interest in working in Hollywood, but more than anything, I’m extremely happy that my movie is going to Hollywood,” he said.

About ‘Maharaja’ success and its Hollywood adaptation

Vijay Sethupathi admitted that the original team did not expect ‘Maharaja’ to travel as far as it eventually did. “We never expected ‘Maharaja’ to go this far. The movie was good, but some people didn’t trust the film. I had that trust, but I didn’t expect this,” he said.Directed by Nithilan Saminathan, ‘Maharaja’ starred Anurag Kashyap, Mamta Mohandas, Natty Subramaniam, and Sachana Namidass alongside Vijay Sethupathi. B Ajaneesh Loknath composed the music, while Dinesh Purushothaman handled cinematography and Philomin Raj edited the film.Meanwhile, Vijay Sethupathi is awaiting ‘Baththa,’ directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan and presented by Atlee. The film, set in 1980s Madras, is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on October 1, with music by Sai Abhyankkar.
