Vastu Before Diwali: The One Corner of Your Home You Must Clean First
As Diwali approaches, Vastu Shastra highlights the importance of cleansing the north-east corner of your home. This crucial area is believed to invite positive energy, which is essential for a joyful celebration. Neglecting this corner can lead to confusion and indecisiveness among family members. A tidy north-east corner fosters clarity, well-being, and spiritual upliftment, making it the perfect preparation before inviting Goddess Lakshmi.

The Diwali cleaning list in most Indian homes is long. Curtains to wash. Fans to wipe. That one cupboard nobody has opened since last Holi. With Dhanteras on November 6 and Diwali on November 8, many families are already halfway through. But Vastu Shastra suggests starting somewhere specific, not with the kitchen or the balcony, and not with whatever looks dirtiest. The first corner to clean is the north-east, known as the Ishaan kona.

Why the North-East Matters Most

Vastu divides a home into directions, each linked to a deity and an element. The north-east is the most sacred of them. Its ruling deity is Ishaan, a form of Lord Shiva, and its element is water. This corner is considered the entry point for positive energy. Morning sunlight first reaches homes from the east, and the north brings steady, cool energy. Where these two meet, Vastu considers it the house’s purest zone. That’s why puja rooms, meditation spaces and water storage are traditionally placed here. When the north-east is cluttered, dark or dirty, Vastu holds that the flow of good energy into the whole house weakens. Family members may feel restless, decisions get delayed, and peace of mind suffers. A clean north-east, on the other hand, is believed to support clarity, health and spiritual growth. Before Diwali, when Goddess Lakshmi is welcomed into the home, this corner sets the tone for everything else.

How to Clean the North-East Properly

Start by finding the corner. Stand at the centre of the home with a compass, or a phone compass app, and locate the direction between north and east. In a flat, it might be a bedroom corner, part of the living room or even a balcony. Then clear it completely. Remove anything heavy, broken or unused. Old newspapers, cartons, shoe racks and dustbins should never stay here. If a heavy almirah stands in this corner, consider shifting it to the south-west, which Vastu considers the right place for weight.Wash the floor and walls thoroughly. Many families add a little sea salt to the water, believed to absorb negative energy. Once dry, sprinkle Ganga jal if available.Keep the corner bright. A clean window, a soft light or a small diya in the evening all help. Dark, damp corners are considered unlucky here.Bring in the water element. A small brass or copper urli filled with clean water and fresh flowers works beautifully. Change the water every day or two so it never turns stale.Leave the space light. The north-east should feel open and airy. A small idol, a tulsi plant near an east-facing window or a simple rangoli is enough.

What Not to Keep Here

Vastu is firm about a few things. Toilets, kitchens and staircases are best avoided in this corner, though in many apartments these are already built in place. If that’s the case, keep the area spotless and well lit.Avoid keeping footwear, brooms or heavy electronics here. Red-coloured décor and sharp metal objects are also traditionally discouraged, since they’re linked with fire and conflict.

After the North-East, Move Clockwise

Once this corner is done, many Vastu practitioners suggest moving through the home in a clockwise direction, finishing the cleaning room by room. Two other areas deserve special care before Diwali. Keep the main entrance clean, well lit, and free of clutter, since this is where Lakshmi is welcomed. A fresh toran and small rangoli at the doorway fit both tradition and Vastu. The north, linked with Kubera, the lord of wealth, is the second most important zone for prosperity. Keeping the locker, cash box or important documents clean and organised in this direction is considered auspicious.By Dhanteras, the house should feel lighter. And on Diwali night, when the first diya is lit in the north-east corner, many families say the whole home feels different.
